Hamlet, Ophelia and the others

by Cornelia Rainer and Stephan Lack, Burgtheater Kasino

“Even without a foe, youth has inner strife.”
William Shakespeare

In “Hamlet, Ophelia and the Others,” Cornelia Rainer retells Shakespeare’s classic “Hamlet” from the perspective of its youthful protagonists, who are the true heroes and heroines of his stage.

At the heart of her production, Cornelia Rainer focuses on desperate adolescents, caught between longing, rebellion, and obedience, as they awaken from childish dreams into the fractured world of adults. Innocence and goodwill have no place here; what seemed reliable in childhood reveals itself to be rotten and corrupt. Values, corrupted for utility, offer no support: whom can they trust in this world—Hamlet, Ophelia, and the others?
