“I can’t go on. I can’t go on anymore,” Marianne says to Oskar. “Then come,” he replies. These are the last words in Ödön von Horváth’s play “Tales from the Vienna Woods.”
In “Journey to Happiness,” we meet Marianne again several years later. Austria is on the brink of the so-called “Anschluss.” The harbingers of an ominous future hang in the air.
Back then, Marianne went with her former fiancé, Oskar. She is stuck in a life she believed she could escape with Alfred. But the journey to happiness was short-lived. As she navigates through her inner and outer worlds, she brushes against the past and slowly finds her way to the present.
