Madame Butterfly, Stadttheater Trier

Madama Butterfly

by Giacomo Puccini, Stadttheater Trier

“Madame Butterfly” tells the tragic love story between the Japanese geisha Cio-Cio-San (Butterfly) and the American naval officer Pinkerton, who abandons her.

In her production, Cornelia Rainer traces the development of the dreamy young woman into one who is deprived of her illusions and determined to act in the end.

Cornelia Rainer brings different cultures, life plans, and desires into radical confrontation. For a brief moment, these foreign worlds seem to merge, only to stand cold and unconnected next to each other again. The director follows Puccini’s overwhelming music, which ultimately crashes into the humanity of the individual actors with such force that a profound shock is inevitable.
