Anna is sent by her family to the big cities to earn money for the construction of a new house on the Mississippi. Anna must traverse seven stations, selling her soul along the way.
“To convey the inherent ambivalence of the ‘sinner’, Brecht splits the personality of Anna into Anna I, the cynical impresario with common sense and a conscience, and Anna II, the emotional, impulsive, artistic beauty, the saleable product with an all too human heart.
The classic deadly sins—sloth, pride, wrath, gluttony, lust, greed, and envy—represent the temptations of short-term desires, the gratification of which must be postponed for the sake of profit. In her production, Cornelia Rainer places the morality of modern materialism at the forefront: sins become virtues where nothing holds value unless it has material worth.
